Strategic Design 1 – Lesson task 1.1

In this task, I will get some knowledge about the course assignment, by setting goals, and lay paths, and answering some relevant questions about the client.

The client wants to attract:
– passing costumers to their shop.
– tourists worldwide to visit their shop in Solvær.
– people form the city for a kind of sabbatical in the countryside.
– young creative people to the area.
The clients also want the logo to brand som of the product they are selling in the shop, as well as they want to create a presence for the shop online.

My goal
is to be able to create a logo that can attract all the target groups above, while at the same time telling something about what kind of store this is.

Paths to reache the goal:
Researche about the area
What place is Svolvær?
– According to http://www.svolvær.net is Svolvær considered the capital of Lofoten and is the municipal center of Vågan municipality. It is approx. 4,590 inhabitants in the city itself and approx. 9,285 people in the entire municipality (according to numbers from 2015). Svolvær is today Lofoten’s Stork fishing village, but also an important trade, administration, and communication center. Svolvær also has several industries, primarily the versatile fishing industry, as well as the workshop industry.

What other businesses is there?
Lofotpils AS– is a Norwegian beer brewery in Lofoten that uses the mountain water in Lofoten to brew beer.

Galleri Dagfinn Bakke AS – The gallery has ongoing exhibitions with watercolours, sculptures and graphics by Dagfinn Bakke and other well-known Norwegian artists

Reko-Ringen – This is a Facebook Page where you can order local food products or by-products of food production. There is no physical store, but customers can order products via the comments field and are given a period of time to pick up the goods at the ferry dock in Svolvær.

Rødsand – Is a small center with a few shops, including a souvenir shop which seems to be popular among tourists in Svolvær (judging from reviews on Google).

Researche about the shop
What do they sell?
-Fra Gård sells fresh produce from the area, freshly baked goods, local artists’ crafts, and of course grandma’s lingonberry jam. The farm shop is basically a food and gift shop that showcases the best the area has to offer.

What kind of products (ex: organic)?
– It seems that many of the products are handmade and since the fresh products are local I assume they are organic, but I can’t say for sure.
Researche about the clients

Who are they?
– Silje Jørgensen is the grandmother of Ole Kåre Jørgensen (24). Silje has run the shop for 25 years, and wants Ole Kåre to join the business, and in the future take over the farm shop.

How am I going to help the client?
– To help the customers, I will research Svolvær and learn what makes Svolvær special. I want to find out what is trendy in terms of such a logo now, and thus create a logo that will hit a few different target groups (tourists, young people).

What are my biggest challanges in achiving the clients goal?
– I find that the clients have many people they want to attract, which I think can be a challenge when it comes to creating a logo that can attract the various target groups.

What does this company stand for and against?
– I think the company stands for short-traveled raw materials, which do not contribute to polluting the environment by being transported over long distances. They show interest in not only the local people, but also tourists from all over the world. They are proud of the place Svolvær, and want to show this through their farm shop. They are concerned that people from the city should come and have a kind of sabbatical.

Who are their competitors? What does this company distinctive/different form its competitors?
– I think their biggest competitors might be regular grocery stores when it comes to groceries. This is perhaps because many automatically associate these as cheaper and with more selection. But at the same time, in today’s society, many people are concerned with local food. Souvenir shops can also be a competitor for Fra Gård as they often have a lot of different things, from handmade things to fridge magnets and shot glasses.

How will I measure success?
– I will measure success through client feedback after using the logo I created.
